The Matterhorn is a mountain in the Alps on the border between Switzerland and Italy, rising to 4,478 metres. Its pyramid shape makes it one of the best-known mountains in Europe.
It was first climbed in 1865. Most visitors view it from Zermatt and from the lifts and trails around the village.
