The Colosseum is a large amphitheatre in the centre of Rome. Construction began under Emperor Vespasian around AD 70, and it was inaugurated under his son Titus in AD 80.

It hosted gladiatorial contests and other public spectacles, and today it is one of the most recognisable monuments of ancient Rome.
